Building Inspection and Zoning
The Electrical Inspection Division of the Department of Building Inspections and Zoning issues electrical permits and performs inspections associated with those permits. Except for a few minor exemptions, all electrical work done in the City of West Allis must be performed under an issued electrical permit. Installing communication and low voltage wiring and their devices or outlets in commercial occupancies requires an electrical permit. An electrical contractor or communication equipment contractor, licensed by the City of West Allis, may secure this permit.
Electrical Permitting Exceptions
For one and two family use properties, an electrical permit is not required as stated hereafter for:
- Replacement of electrical receptacles, switches, lighting fixtures, and low voltage equipment. A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) shall be installed when changing a receptacle where a grounding means is not readily available.
- Replacement equipment and appliances having a proper factory supplied flexible cord.
- Installation of a paddle fan fixture or replacement fixture where the existing wiring and supporting electrical box is listed and labeled to support the fixture or fan (if new wiring or box is installed, a permit is required).
- A maximum of five (5) total receptacles, switches, fixtures, or appliances, as stated above, may be replaced per calendar year, per dwelling unit.
Although these installations are exempt from permitting requirements, all installations shall conform to current electrical code requirements. Please contact the Electrical Inspector at (414) 302-8400 regarding your questions about the Electrical Code.
For West Allis Electrical Code requirements refer to the West Allis Revised Municipal Code, Chapter 14. The City of West Allis Electrical Code adopts, without amendments, the State of Wisconsin Department of Commerce (COMM) Chapter COMM 16. COMM 16 adopts the National Electrical Code (NEC) as amended by the State of Wisconsin.
