How do I register for a CPAT Orientation class and/or CPAT test?
To register for a CPAT test date, you must submit an application. Applications are available online or at the Fire Department Administration Building, 7332 W. National Avenue. The completed application must include all fees. Application fees are non-refundable.
-
Who can take the class or test? Are there minimum requirements?
You must be 18 years old to attend the CPAT orientation class or take the CPAT test. A state photo identification (drivers license, State ID card, school, military, or federal passport or visa) must be presented at the CPAT orientation and test sign-in.
-
Is the West Allis Fire Department's CPAT test accepted by other fire departments?
A candidate who passes the WAFD test has no reasonable expectation that the testing result or certification will be accepted anywhere else or by any other agency. Agencies are welcome to accept a candidate's WAFD CPAT certificate at their own discretion and by their own authority.
-
Do I have to take an Orientation class before taking the CPAT test?
All candidates must attend at least two (2) orientation sessions, with the first session taking place at least eight (8) weeks prior to the actual test date. At the orientation session(s) you will have the opportunity to view a videotaped presentation of the test, observe a demonstration of each event, receive "Hands-on" familiarity with the actual CPAT apparatus, and receive guidance on specific conditioning regimens and techniques to help them prepare for the test. Although the orientations and time trials set forth above must be treated as a mandatory condition for candidates taking the CPAT test, it is recognized that some candidates may believe that they are capable of passing the CPAT without attending the orientation and time trial sessions. It is therefore permissible for candidates to be excused from this requirement upon receipt of a written and signed waiver from the candidate acknowledging that this orientation and practice program was made available to all candidates on an equal basis and that the candidate voluntarily and knowingly waives the opportunity. If you are unable to attend, be sure to read and review the CPAT Orientation Guide and CPAT Preparation Guide [CPAT Documents].
-
Where can I get more information about the CPAT test and how to prepare for it?
View complete information about the CPAT Orientation class and CPAT test.
-
How often can I take the test?
Candidates who fail the test may retest on the next available test date that a testing vacancy exists. A candidate who wishes to retest must complete another CPAT application and submit the required corresponding CPAT fee. It is strongly recommended that candidates who fail the CPAT prepare themselves physically for another attempt.
-
If I am not immediately hired, how often do I have to take the test?
Certificates issued by the West Allis Fire Department have the date the person passed the CPAT test on it. Each fire department must set their own criteria for determining when they would consider the certificate "Expired".
-
What do I have to bring to the orientation class and on test day?
You will be required to present a photo ID (drivers license, State ID card, school, military, or federal passport or visa) at sign-in for both the orientation class and test. You must wear long pants and footwear with closed heels and toes. Jewelry is not allowed. All other equipment (hard hat, gloves, etc) will be provided. Proper hydration is critical. Hydrate before you arrive. Water will be available on site.
-
Will I be issued a certification letter or card if I pass?
Upon successful completion of the CPAT test, candidates will receive one (1) original site-validated certificate. Additional certificates may be obtained for an additional processing fee via a written request.
