Crime Prevention >The Citizen Police Academy is a ten week course designed to provide citizens with a first hand look at the operations of the police department. Participants will be instructed in basic police procedures, participate in some of the same training officers receive such as; use of the radar unit, evidence collection, defense and arrest tactics and our new Fire Arms Training System. This program will also provide citizens with the opportunity to ask questions about police services and to express their concerns about quality of life issues. One of the goals of the Citizen Police Academy is to help the residents of West Allis to better understand how the police work in their community. It is hoped that all graduates of the Citizen Academy will get to know more about the men and women who are protecting their community and why they make the decisions they do. When residents take a more personal interest in their city, and the protection of their community and neighborhoods, they will enjoy a safer and closer relationship with their neighbors. Community Oriented Policing plays an important and vital role in reducing crime in any community. Our focus is to improve communications and obtain citizen input and support throughout the city. It is our hope that the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues that are affecting our community. Graduates will take their knowledge back into their neighborhoods where they can use it to enhance the quality of neighborhood life. The Citizen Police Academy is a ten-week course, with one-three hour class being held each week. Each class topic will provide an overview of different aspects of police work performed by West Allis Police Officers. Weekly topics include: Police Hiring Requirements, Overview of Patrol Division, Detective Bureau and Crisis Response Unit, Traffic Enforcement, Criminal Investigations, Court Room Testimony, Fire Arms Training Program and Exercises, Traffic Stop Demonstration, Firing Range, Defense and Arrest Tactics, Canine Demonstration, Special Investigation Unit, Identification Bureau and Fingerprinting, Accident Investigation, Operating While Intoxicated, Dispatch Center, Police Reserves, a Graduation Ceremony and Station Tour.
