Crime Prevention >Officers assigned to the Crime Prevention Bureau teach a series of educational crime prevention, safety and drug prevention programs in the schools. The Officer Friendly Program is taught to students in kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth and fifth grades. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (D.A.R.E.) is a drug prevention program aimed at children who have yet to have their first alcohol or drug experience. The main D.A.R.E. Program is taught to 6th grade students. These programs are continued in the secondary schools by other drug prevention programs. One officer is assigned to each of the secondary schools in the city. Our liaison programs have proven to be very effective in preventing problems at the secondary schools and in solving crimes that involve students both in and out of school. These officers teach programs in each grade level, which reinforce and build on topics taught in our other community educational programs. In addition to teaching various programs, the officers assist students, school staff, and administrators as needed. Students and parents are referred to the proper social agencies for assistance. The officers have assisted our Crime Stoppers efforts by disseminating information to the student population about crimes that have occurred. Some of the crime tips that have been provided to Crime Stoppers have come from students who attend the secondary schools. These tips provide our investigators with additional information, which in many cases has helped solve crimes. |
