Police Department

The Patrol Division is the largest and most visible component of the West Allis Police Department. These officers serve a community that is 11.4 square miles with a population of 61,254 residents. When a citizen needs the service of a law enforcement officer, these are the men and women who respond. They are available twenty-four hours a day regardless of the nature of the problem.

Officers in the Patrol Division

  • Respond to initial calls for service
  • Provide a visible deterrent to crime
  • Patrol by bicycle
  • Provide traffic enforcement for parades and special events

The Patrol Division and its officers continue to provide manpower to other areas within the department. Patrol Division officers work special assignments for the Crime Prevention Bureau, Special Investigations Unit, Training Bureau, and the Detective Bureau. This diversity of assignments offers an officer the opportunity to experience many different aspects of law enforcement enhancing career development.

Canine Unit

This unit is comprised of one handler and one canine which is Belgium Malinois. Both the handler and canine received extensive training at the Southern Police Canine Institute. The canine is trained in drug detection, tracking, evidence collection and recovery, building searches and officer protection. This canine is used regularly by our Special Investigations Unit in the execution of search warrants.

Weed and Seed Program

Two patrol officers are assigned to the Weed and Seed program. These officers work closely with officers from the Crime Prevention Bureau to increase the police involvement with citizens, social agencies and other City departments in an effort to improve the social, health, educational and physical environment of the neighborhood residents.

Through aggressive police patrol and citizen cooperation, the violent crime rate has decreased since the start of the program. It should be noted that whenever we note a crime trend anywhere in the city, directed police patrols are assigned to these areas. The officers work in cooperation with citizens and business owners to solve these problems.
