Refuse and Recycling Route Consolidation In an economy where the City has to be the more efficient with less resources available, the seven (7) current refuse and recycling routes per day have been consolidated into six (6) routes. A small percentage of residents received letters in late September alerting them that their refuse and recycling collection day changed effective October 3. Any questions can be directed to the Sanitation and Street Division at 302-8800 or the Recycling Office at 302-8831.

West Allis residents who have recycling picked up by the City can now include #4 and #5 plastics in their blue bag. This is for containers or lids that have a #4 or #5 on them and also any caps and rings. It does not include any type of bags. Any questions regarding the West Allis recycling program may be directed to the Recycling Office at 302-8831 or the Sanitation and Street Division at 302-8800.

Sanitation Section

The Sanitation Section is responsible for the collection of refuse from one through three family residences and recyclables from one through four family residences. Properties are serviced from either a curbside location or an alley location.

Junk mail kits are available to help reduce the amount of unwanted junk mail you receive. Each kit contains three cards to mail which will result in removal of your name from certain mailings lists and phone numbers to call to stop receiving pre-approved credit card offers and to remove your name from mailing brokers' lists. Junk mail kits are available at City Hall, the Library, Municipal Yard and Police Department.

Information regarding refuse collection can be found in Section 7.05 of the Revised Municipal Code and information regarding recycling can be found in Section 7.051 of the Revised Municipal Code.

Computers and Electronics

On September 1, 2010 a new electronics recycling law takes effect that prohibits the disposal of various electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players and cell phones in Wisconsin landfills. The new program called E-Cycle Wisconsin is administered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and establishes a system for electronics from households and public schools to be collected and recycled.

Many electronics contain harmful materials including mercury, lead and cadmium that are released into the air, water and soil if landfilled, incinerated or illegally dumped. Electronics contain valuable, reusable materials like glass, metal and plastic that can be recycled for new products. Reusing these valuable materials lessens environmental impacts by reducing the need for new materials.

Households and public schools can recycle electronics at locations across the state. Collection sites in Milwaukee County include American TV and Appliance stores, Best Buy stores and Goodwill. For a full list of collection sites see the DNR’s website at dnr.wi.gov/ecyclewisconsin or call the Sanitation and Street Division at 302-8800 or the Recycling Office at 302-8831. Some collectors may charge fees and may not accept all devices. Contact any collectors beforehand to learn about their policies.
